Three Good Reasons NOT to Follow Fashion Advice

You can’t always trust fashion advice, so be careful when considering the source. Here’s why:

1) You think “It looks good on the mannequin. I’ll buy it!”

But, just because it looks good on the mannequin doesn’t mean it’s a winner for you. The retailers are enticing you to buy, by dressing up the mannequin, BUT you probably don’t look like that mannequin! Not many of us do. We have to take into account our own body type, coloring, face shape, facial features skin and hair qualities.

2) “My friend thinks it looks good on me.”

If she can see beyond her own style, coloring and body type, she may be right. Otherwise she could just be imposing her tastes and preferences onto you. Or maybe even unconsciously cloning you into a copy of herself. This is a hard one because, if you can’t see it for yourself, you’ll probably be tempted to follow her blindly. After all, she always looks great, doesn’t she? But you need an objective eye for this. If your own eyes aren’t objective and you don’t know for sure if your friend’s eyes are either, you might want to consider working with a professional who’s been trained to see objectively.

3)It’s in the fashion magazines.” Fashion magazines have two big limitations. They are:

a) Too generic. They can’t possibly cover all of the variables that make up your unique style or look. General guidelines can be somewhat helpful, but they don’t go far enough. Compare that to understanding exactly why something looks great on you, or not.

b) Too limited. They can only show what’s going to be available for that season which has been dictated by the designers. The designers don’t’ know YOU. They’re just playing out their own fantasies and preferences that don’t have anything to do with you. Well, unless you happen to get lucky on occasion!

Sometimes, it all feels too complicated. You may be tempted to just play it safe. So you stick with basics. You don’t know how to accessorize, so you don’t. But playing it safe often translates into boring.

On the other hand, you may throw caution to the winds and buy your clothes on the whim of the moment. You choose a passing fad, a trend that may be on its way out, a cute little something that doesn’t go with anything else in your closet. But, when you do that, too often you end up with a mishmash in your closet and never know what to wear.

Either way you never feel great in your clothes, and that’s a problem!

What to do?

1) Take the time to understand your style, your personal coloring, and your body type.

2) Learn what works best on you, and don’t buy anything unless you know it’s right.

3) If you feel overwhelmed at the thought of taking on that task and don’t feel you can do it successfully, consider getting professional help. Advice from an expert can keep you on the right track, stop you from making mistakes, and save you money in the long run.

A Guide To Jewelry Boxes

Taking care of your jewelry begins with proper storage. There are certain damages you can cause by being careless about where you put the pieces when they are not in use. Aside from the risks of theft or of losing them, you expose them to many elements that could lessen their luster or cause irreversible imperfections.

A jewelry box is an essential part of collecting jewelry. It can help you organize the pieces. For example, putting sharp metal-based pieces in a compartment separate from the precious stones to prevent scratches or chips.

Choosing a Box

When choosing a jewelry box, price and design may be among your first considerations, but also consider how the material of the box will react with your jewelry. For example, wood reacts with silver, causing it to tarnish. To solve this problem, wooden boxes must have a lining, usually velvet.

The size of the box should also be part of the equation. If you are planning to build your collection, you must have a box large enough to accommodate the different pieces you will acquire.

A jewelry box may come in paper, plastic, metal or wood. Of these, wood is the material of choice for elegant pieces. The classic look of handcrafted hardwoods like mahogany, maple, elm, and cherry, compliments the beauty of the jewelry pieces. The boxes often have solid brass or gold-plated hinges, locks, and knobs to complete the look. Other more lavish designs feature leather or animal skin.

Expensive and expertly crafted jewelry boxes last a long time. Their value increases through the years, as well. Italian jewelry boxes made from traditional materials fetch several thousand dollars. This is the reason why serious jewelry collectors are also keen jewelry box enthusiasts. They know that the boxes themselves are valuable in their own right, making them an important part of the collection.

Fashion Advice For People Who Work at Home

Proper clothing helps workers perform their tasks to the best of their abilities. This holds true even if you happen to carry out your work at home. What are the top work at home professionals wearing today? After intensive research, these are the styles that made the list of favorites for successful work-at-home fashionistas.

Novelty Tees A must for every telecommuter or home-based entrepreneur is an assortment of tee-shirts that either:

  1. boasts of where you’ve been, where you want other people to think you have been, or where one of your friends or relatives has been
  2. advertises your business, your favorite beer, charitable event, restaurant or tavern, merchandise or casino
  3. expounds your personal or political opinion in a particularly charming, witty or sarcastic manner

Tee-shirts allow for ease of movement, are durable and somewhat stain-resistant and are great for the budget conscious. These fashion staples are often given to you as gifts, either by people who know your quirks or businesses you patronize. Females may prefer tank tops with informative slogans like “hottie” or “princess” emblazoned across the chest.

Comfortable Pants Just because you are home bound does not mean you have to stay in your pajama bottoms all day, though that is one good alternative. You could also choose to don yoga pants or sweats or even a favorite, appropriately faded pair of jeans, though there are some advantages to pants with elastic waists. These trousers promote good circulation and flexibility and don’t bind while you are sitting hunched over the computer. Shorts can be substituted when temperatures allow.

Outerwear When a tee shirt or tank just doesn’t seem like enough, many at-home professionals choose to top off their look with the addition of a sweatshirt or flannel. An oversized bathrobe is another option that is favored by those in cooler climates.

Sensible Footwear Polished professionals make sure they look good from head to toe. When the weather is chilly, a good pair of soft, furry slippers is a great way to complete your fashionable work ensemble. Of course, a pair of socks will work in a pinch. Summer footwear is optional, though it is wise to have a pair of flip flops easily accessible in case you have to go out and get the mail or walk the dog.

Functional Accessories There are many items that can fall into this category. A favorite coffee mug is one of them. Kept hot and steaming, this useful piece helps improve efficiency and morale. A caffeinated beverage of soda or ice tea also coordinates nicely. Other preferred accessories include M3P players, ponytail holders and doodle pads. If you work at home, you may want to try some of these style tips to help you improve your performance and your confidence level. Remember, it’s okay to express some of your own, unique personality by adding individual touches such as strategically placed stains, intricate holes or relevant rips.
